Life in the Higham House Goes Daily

We are so excited to announce that we are taking our vlog every day. For the last year or so, we have been playing around with our family vlog, Life in the Higham House. We were inspired to pick up the camera by other YouTube families who were sharing their lives online.

It was something said by ShayCarl of the Shaytards that really got us thinking about vlogging. In one of his vlogs, he was reflecting on the journey that he and his family had been on. Vlogging had open the door to a great many things for Shay and his family. But the one thing that he said he was most grateful for was the video record of his family and how they have grown. Now mind you, Shay put his families entire lives online, even the birth of some of his kids. But what a sweet idea, having the ability to go back and watch life happen, over and over again.

That thought is what encouraged us to vlog as a family. Our kids are growing up so fast. Life at times travels by lightyears and not minutes. So to capture a few of those moments on video to share, well...it's something we had to try.

Our kids are growing up so fast.
Life at times travels by lightyears and not minutes.

We started out vlogging as a way to simply capture a few of life's moments. Scrapbooking is great. Photo albums are wonderful. But video reminds you of the voices, the laughter, the joy, and the crazy things that happened. Already, we look back at certain vlog posts and we're amazed at how much the kids have grown. So vlogging for us as a family has been a wonderful way to make and treasure our family moments.

However, blogging for us has become much more. People watch our vlogs. Not a lot, but people are watching. Maybe you watch the vlog. If you do, thanks! As we realized that people were watching our vlogs, it dawned on us that we have a responsibility to our new and growing vlog-family. So we asked ourselves what it was that we hoped to accomplish with our vlogs? What was our responsibility? That answer came pretty quick and easy.

From the blog to the vlog, our focus is family; the building up and encouraging, the promotion and the empowering, even supporting and helping. Over the years Amy and I (Jay) have developed a real passion for the family. Whether it's Jay working with students or Amy caring for mom's and women, we feel like God has called us to a family ministry. And that ministry includes how we use the vlog.

We have a voice, a platform, and we want to use that voice and platform to encourage the family. Tim Schmoyer, a YouTube guru and creator of Video Creators, (who also vlog his family with his wife Dana over at Schmovies) often talks about sharing the story. Well, we want to share our story, so that's what we are doing.

As a family, we want to share our family journey with our growing YouTube family! We want to be a positive, encouraging source of family fun. We want to be real, sharing both the highs and the lows. We want share our story of faith as we raise five kids, work on our marriage, and chase after Jesus in our individual personal walks with Christ. And, we want to help other families do the same.

This is why we have made the decision to begin vlogging with a more regular schedule. Up till now, our blogs have been mostly weekend highlight reels with a scattering of a few special events. But what we are realizing is, that inconsistency doesn't help to build or grow the relationship between our family and yours. So starting this month, we will be posting a daily, family vlog.

As a family, we want to share our family journey
with our growing YouTube family!

Our goal is to be able to post a new vlog every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Each daily vlog will post at 7:00 p.m. The only day we will not vlog is on Sunday, as that is the day that we intend on keeping for worship and family! (But if we do do something vlog worthy, we'll share it with you at some point during the week.)

By going to a daily vlog schedule, we hope to accomplish three things. 1. We hope to grow a larger community of families through consistent connection from our family to yours. 2. We hope to build relationships with parents who are looking to connect with families who share the same values and importance of raising children. 3. We hope to encourage a wider section of families who are looking to make faith a priority.

Sure it's going to be fun. We have already talked with the kids, who by-the-way have been pushing for us to do a daily vlog for sometime now,  and we realize that we have to up the game if we are going to vlog every day. So look forward to the Higham's actually going out and doing things, exploring, journeying, and living our family adventure out in fresh and exciting ways. But, there will still be times of real life. Raising five kids comes with five different schedules, and those schedules are often cramped with sporting events and practices, taxi services, and parenting moments. So not every vlog will be filled with adventure.

That being said, we hope that you will come along with us on this journey. We're not totally sure where it all will lead, but we are trusting God and following his lead as we walk together along this road! So here's to the journey!
